Water Light Time Overview

Beneath the world's waters lie landscapes, species, vegetation and populations as diverse and splendid as those on land, yet these kingdoms have been explored by few. is an extraordinary look at the work of David Doubilet, an artist and diver who pioneered the medium of deep-sea reportage to become widely acclaimed as the world's leading underwater photographer. This fascinating and evocative volume looks at a world in which humans are neither the measure nor the master, but an encumbered intruder. From the waters of the Galapagos to the Red Sea, from the Pacific shores to the fresh waters of North America, "Water Light Time" includes over 25 years of Doubilet's work, and reveals the mesmerising beauty of more than 30 bodies of water. Rich with fascinating sea creatures, wondrous life forms and breathtaking underwater landscapes, "Water Light Time" is an unforgettable look at many of the earth's most remarkable natural compositions.

Water Light Time Specifications

When David Doubilet was a child, he photographed swimmers in the waters off of New Jersey. Water Light Time is a collection of images that capture the underwater magnificence that seized the photographer's imagination in childhood and spurred a lifelong fascination. Underwater plant life floating like snakes, bright blue water filled with schools of silver fish, a diver immersed in a throng of bubbling yellow jellyfish, a close-up of pink and white sea anemones looking all the world like a floating bouquet of flowers--each image in this book is exquisitely photographed with preternaturally clear colors, full of detail and depth. Some images toy with perspective, creating surreal tableaux as a crustacean leg pokes out of the yellow-green water to appear almost as large as a nearby tree.

With a career that started as a National Geographic photographer in 1972, Doubilet has a lifetime of experience from which to make such a marvelous meditation on this otherworld that is vaguely familiar to most readers only through pictures and visits to aquariums. Doubilet captures what must surely be his own awe at the uniqueness of being a human in this nonhuman environment, and the reader can marvel at both the lushness of life in the water and at the beauty of the photographs themselves, which dominate almost all of the book's 240 pages. --Jennifer Cohen

Don't expect professional results with this camera, but you'll be surprisingly pleased with the versatility this diminutive compact outfit provides. Like any housing, you need to keep the housing clean and free from sand or grit that could create a leak. Since the main seal is not actually an o'ring, I was very faithful to clean the surfaces with a cotton tip (Qtip) and apply some o'ring grease to the surface as well as a thin film on the seal itself. The seal is sort of a wedge shape, so it should furnish a good unavoidable pressure seal. The clean part is more for all the diminutive operate buttons that allow you to convert settings of the camera underwater. We'll get into the best settings we found when using the camera underwater.

When they say the housing is good to 15 meters or nearby 33 feet, they are not lying. Not that we were trying to flood the housing or anything, but at 60 feet the camera is not operational because the pressure is squeezing the controls and shuts the camera off. At 40 feet, you might get the camera to work, but don't count on changing the settings. At 35 feet the camera seems to work fine with all the features and settings operational. For many divers, this will be too limiting because most of your dives will be deeper than 35 feet. However, keep in mind that the red/yellow/orange end of the spectrum is filtered out beyond this depth too.

The camera and housing blend are well matched and easy to operate. With the clear plastic housing, you can actually see the settings on the camera. Like most digital displays unavoidable angles are more difficult to see, but with the permissible shading and angle all is descriptive on the 2 inch screen. Even though you can convert the lens focal distance from wide angle to zoom, we kept the setting on wide angle for the dives during the whole process because of the water. Keep this in mind for all underwater photography; stay close to your field and use the widest angle inherent for best results.

For the still shots, the camera was set for the strobe to fire with each shot. This uses up your batteries faster, but if the field is closer than 8 feet, you'll have best imaging and color. The best results were our macro shots where we set the camera for 'close-up' and used the flash. When using the movie mode, you'll be impressed with the sharpness of the images, but don't expect high capability audio. The housing must absorb a lot of the sound as much of the underwater audio is muted. More than likely, you'll edit with some musical background anyway.

The color balance was a diminutive off. We did convert the settings agreeing to the instructions and the results were that the color balance was a diminutive on the blue side for topside shots. This was not an issue for the underwater shots as the greenish tint of the water was eliminated. Most of the color balance issues can be handled in the editing phase.

The claim of being 12.0 mega pixels is a diminutive deceiving because this is the 'hardware interpolation' not the 'image resolution' which is 5.0 mega pixels. All in all, we were not disappointed in the capability results of the best pictures. However, some of the shots showed camera shake even with the built in flash. This means that the shutter does adjust for the estimate of light, so it's foremost to squeeze the cameral and hold it as still as possible.

We used an 8 Gb Sd card because we predicted to take a lot of video and had ample memory space for two dives. We didn't use the provided Usb cable because we use a card reader to our laptop and then back up the memory to a conveyable hard drive. The power source uses two triple A Alkaline Batteries, so it's not a problem having new batteries for each dive. We didn't use the 'voice recorder' feature, but from our underwater video experience, it would not be recommended inside the underwater housing.

Now for the lowest line advice on this gear: If you plan to take your underwater imaging seriously, save your money for a more ample system. This could be the excellent outfit for a sport diver that wants to share their diving sense with their friends and family. For less than 0 (prices range from -100), not including your Sd Memory card or batteries, it is a value. The Svp cameras are available at some dive shops and are directly marketed from several importers online. The next "point and shoot" underwater outfits, without an external strobe, will most likely cost over 0. So, if you are going on vacation and reasoning about having your own digital camera outfit for shallow water, this is the answer. Of course, for nearby at most diving centers you could rent a camera with all included. Sometimes the option is not easy, but you can know a lot more from someone who has tested the Svp out. It is a great still and video camera outfit for nearby the water and underwater to about 35 feet.

The diving in North Sulwesi is focused in two main areas, the Bunaken National marine Park and the noted muck diving capital of Lembeh Strait. There are other destinations where good diving is on offer in North Sulwesi, including the dive sites in Sangihe Island and Pulau Bangka, however it is the dive sites in Bunaken and Lembeh which draw large numbers of scuba divers here year after year.

The scuba diving in Bunaken is predominantly characterised by the awesome vertical walls which almost surround the island. Along these walls, an array of cracks, caves and crevices are home to a wide range of fish life while the day as well as the night. Dive sites including Fukui Point and Black Rock furnish divers with passage to striking corals as well as striking array of smaller marine life.

Lembeh Strait is widely acknowledged as being the 'muck diving' capital of the world, and offers what can only be described as a truly unique touch in diving. The diving itself is shaped by the black sandy bottom of the ocean in the region, which is home to a wide choice of critters and smaller marine life. It is for this hypothesize that underwater photographers often pick to make the longer journey out to Lembeh Strait, to sample some of the finest opportunities for underwater macro photography to be found anywhere in South East Asia. Octopus, flying gunnards, frogfish and dwarf lionfish can all be found throughout the numerous dive sites in the Lembeh Strait.

Diving is inherent in North Sulwesi throughout the year, although the best conditions are to be found from late March through to November. From January through to March, heavy rains and strong winds can be found throughout the region, leaving the conditions unfavourable for scuba diving.

Without doubt, the diving in North Sulawesi is of the top standard, and the region fully justifies its claim to be one of South East Asia's leading scuba diving destinations. The superb dive sites of Bunaken and Lembeh assuredly ensure the longer journey time to reach here is worthwhile, and leave you only reasoning of when you can return!

3. Movable Hard Drive / Image Tank. These battery-operated devices are pocket-sized and will copy the pictures from a camera chip and save a duplicate on the hard drive. Some of them also have a nice preview screen and Tv output so you can enjoy the photos as a slide show. They act as a hard drive when plugged into a laptop. They are perfect for on-location shots or long vacations where you don't have your computer with you. (0-0)

4. Another Lens! If your photographer has a singular Lens Reflex (Slr) camera, then pick their brain about lenses they have and want. This is one area where photographers are very picky, so may want to go as far as having them impart the specific make and model. If you want to go "all out", get them to tell you about their dream lens - it's the one that they categorically want, (but probably don't need), and won't buy for themselves. (0-00)

5. Filters for lenses. There are a collection of filters or modifiers that can be put on lenses. You'll want to know what size lens (measured in millimeters), and what they have or want. A combine ideas are: a circular polarizer (which reduces glare and deepens sky colors), close-up lenses (to magnify and get close to small stuff), and neutral-density filters (which reduce light in some or all of the image). (-0)

6. Monopod and swivel. A monopod is like a walking stick with a thread on the top. It's a great stand-in for a tripod when you can't use it. good even, get a swivel head for the top of the monopod and your photographer can rotate the camera from horizontal to vertical and still get the benefits of the stability of a monopod. (Monopod: -0; Swivel: -0)

7. uncostly waterproof point and shoot digital camera. Regardless of their main brand, having a small pocket-sized waterproof digital camera is great for everyday use, scouting locations, and the spontaneous shoot opportunities. These cameras have great resolution and make nice images; some even shoot video. Waterproof means you can swim with it, shoot in the rain, and leave it in your sweaty pants pocket all day. (0-0)

8. Subscription to online photography forum or training. There are some great pay sites on the net. Digital Wedding Forum is tailored to new professionals as well as seasoned wedding and portrait photographers. Web Photo School is great for studying the fundamentals of photography and editing. Find one that matches their interests and they will have hours of online studying and enjoyment. (0-0/yr)

9. Subscription to photography magazine. There are many good magazines out there. 13. Hook them up with a mentor. Find out who they admire in the photographic world, and dispose for them to meet them. Or, try to get a book or video of theirs signed or personalized. Best case, see of their mentor would bring them in for training or some coaching session. ($large range)

17. Camera case or backpack. As they get more stuff, they will need more or larger camera bags. Or roller cases or bags for lights and other stuff. (-100)

18. Flash bracket for camera. These are also a bit personal to fit their needs, but if they shoot with external flash, a bracket may be great for their needs. If they don't have an external flash, that may also be a good idea. Make sure you get their camera specifics for the flash and bracket. (Bracket: 0-300; Flash: 0-0)

19. High-end printer. There are some truly wonderful printers for amateurs and professionals. Some will print on large size paper and originate output rivaling the large labs. Variations on this theme are paper samplers, note card stock, and mixture printer-scanners. (Printer: 0-00)

20. Slide Show software. Who doesn't want to watch slick slide presentations with music? Does your photographer make or sell slide shows yet? ProShow Gold is a great start, and Proshow Producer is even better. (-0)

21. Color Calibration. Every monitor is different. It is valuable to be able to see true colors on your monitors. These devices will calibrate screens and sometimes even printers and other devices to known settings so the color seen on the screen is accurate. (0-0)

22. Photographer's Vest. Yes, very nerdy, but also very functional. (-0)

23. Camera clothing. Weather protective covers for cameras will help in a drizzle or other inclement weather. Waterproof housings allow the camera to be used underwater. Blimps will reduce the shutter sound to allow use in very quiet situations. These are custom fit to camera and sometimes lenses so be truthful to pick the right products. (-0)

24. Find them a gig. Use your network and influence to get them a photographic opportunity that they would love to do. This is good for starter photographers - professionals may have different ideas. For more ideas, check out my article on 10 Great Ways to Grow as a professional Photographer.

25. A New Body. Camera body that is. If they have an Slr, think buying a duplicate body or one model up, if they take the same lenses. Having the flexibility of a backup camera or two lenses ready immediately will make your photographer smile. (00-00).

26. Photography Books. There are great "how-to" books about every type of photography. Or think getting them books on enterprise or technology such as Photoshop or web design. Or pick up some coffee-table books with great photography that they can use for inspiration. (-)

27. Blank Dvds. Many photographers back up work on Dvds, and use them for slide shows. They'll appreciate having extras. Don't forget jewel cases if they use them. (-)

28. Dvd/Cd label printer. These are pretty specialized devices. They will allow the user to print any image on a extra Dvd or Cd. If they gift Dvds to anyone, this may be a great item for them. Note that some newer printers will also print directly on these same Dvd or Cds. (0-0).

29. Proof Books or albums. If they print lots of proofs, don't hide them away in a box. Get them several albums so they can display them and use them to show others. There are some neat "self-stick" albums that let you press the print on an adhesive background and originate a very professional album. (-0)

30. More Power! This can be lithium Aa batteries for those flashes and point and shoots, extra batteries for their camera model, Movable batteries to run their lighting, and postponement cords and power strips for all of their electronic toys. You can never have too many cords! (-0)

How do you pick the right gift? You can print this and leave it out where your photographer will see it and get the hint and maybe circle a few things. You can ask them to build a "wish list" on one of the beloved online merchants such as Amazon. Or, you can have one of their associates pick their brain on your profit and article back.

To save some money, check out sites like eBay, Craigslist and other areas where citizen may be selling items. Also check out local camera shop for consigned or used equipment.

In any case, enjoy choosing and presenting one of these gifts to your photographer. They will appreciate the time and endeavor you spent!

What is Gps (Geo) Photo Tagging?

The onset of the Global positioning ideas (Gps) technology was originally advanced for forces use. It is used today as the foundation for some great innovative gadgets that we use on a daily basis. Gps is used in cellphones, automobile sailing systems and standalone Gps's used by joggers, hunters and people from all walks of life. Just in the last few years the technology is used to tag digital photos with Gps data containing accurate geographic information.

Do you have boxes of photos that you can't remember where they were photographed, or the date and time? It can be a frustrating process trying to remember the information. Well there is a clarification to the problem, called geotagging. When you geotag photos, you are adding the latitude, longitude, and altitude facts into the image file. It adds the data into something called the Exif (exchangeable image file format) area of the image file. Further facts such as time and date can also be included in the stored image file.

Underwater Photography

Newer cameras have global positioning ideas (Gps) units built into them. When a photo is taken, it is automatically stamped with the camera's location. This recipe produces the most accurate result. Because not all cameras come with a built-in geotagging device, there are a number of geotagging devices that are mountable on cameras that have a hotshoe. The devices commonly come with software which adds the data after the photo download, to the file connected with the photo image. Up-to-date innovations add the Gps receiver right in the camera. This does two things, it provides Gps locations for photos and automatically adds the data into the Exif area which saves the frustration of trying to marry the data with the photo by using other processes.

What is Gps (Geo) Photo Tagging?

There is a enterprise in Germany that has enhanced the acquisition of geodata by developing the Jobo photoGps will also includes the address (i.e. Country, city, street) and closest point of interest in the image file. This enables you to quest for exact places, streets or points of interest without having to tag each photo individually. And the best part is that the Jobo photoGps works in nearly all countries worldwide. For access to geotagging devices and cameras and Further facts take a look at placeforgps.com.

How to Be a Mermaid

Have you ever dreamed of having a mermaid tail and skimming straight through the water with the fish? Of seeing and feeling like a real mermaid, your hair flowing behind you as you swirl and twirl underwater?

Well, it is potential today to be a mermaid-though I'm afraid I can't promise you'll be able to breathe under water!

Underwater Photography

No, I'm talking about a new pastime which is growing nearby the globe, and it's called mermaiding. Not just girls and women are doing it, but so are boys and men.

How to Be a Mermaid

Many of us were inspired by the noted international model, Hannah Fraser, also known as Hannah Mermaid. She dreamed of being a mermaid since she was nine years old. As she got older, she started modeling. At last she started crafting her own faultless mermaid costumes and doing underwater photo and video shoots. She now has three gorgeous, one-of-a-kind tails and lots of wonderful footage you can view on her website by googling "Hannah Mermaid." She has mermaided with sea turtles, dolphins, fish and whales!!! She has trained herself to withstand ocean pressure down to approximately 40 feet, and she can gold her breath for 2 minutes.

You can also do a quest on YouTube for "mermaid" and you'll find lots of citizen who are production and swimming in their own mermaid tails.

So now you know about mermaiding, and you can't wait to get started. If you know how to sew and have the time, you can make your own straightforward tail. Sasha Mermaid has a wonderful YouTube video tutorial on "How to Make A Mermaid Tail."

If you want a tail but don't want to sew one, you can find a business which makes mermaid tails, tops and accessories. There are several out there, along with a couple of eBay sellers. Prices range from a hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars.

Now that you have your tail, a matching top and perhaps a seashell necklace or two, you are ready to mermaid.

The tails use a monofin, which is a singular flipper which both your feet fit into. It takes a itsybitsy getting used to, swimming with your legs attached together in your tail. If you already know the dolphin swim, this is a great stroke to do with the tail on. But you don't need to know any special swim strokes-the tail with the monofin itself will cause you to swim mermaid-fashion. It looks very gorgeous in the water, is fast and fun to do.

Now, to improve your mermaiding, there are several skills to master. First, you need to swim, dive and do twirls in the water without ever holding your nose. If you are used to holding your nose, your first step is to learn to blow out a itsybitsy when you first go under and learn to not hold your nose anymore. If you custom this a lot, but find that there are times you can't get by without holding your nose or too much water comes in, I propose you get a clear noseplug specifically for swimming. You can slip it onto the top of your nose and it will keep the water out, no matter what you do in the water. Since it is clear, it won't draw attentiveness to itself.

Secondly, you need to custom holding your breath for longer periods of time under water. Use base sense and caution-don't let yourself get into danger or pass out. But from my research I've found that studying to hold your breath for long periods of time plainly comes with custom and studying to relax in the water. The mermaid performers in Weeki Wachee, Florida, swim and custom every day. Some of them have learned to hold their breath up to six minutes long! an additional one mermaid model, Mermaid Linden, hires herself out for mermaid performances and she has trained herself to hold her breath for four and a half minutes!

Now, custom doing swirly movements in the water, creating a kind of water ballet. The more of these you do, the more gorgeous a mermaid you'll be!

How Photography Has Changed Over the Past 200 Years

Taking pictures throughout one's life has been a part of American culture for over a hundred years now. The camera was first introduced in the United States in the early 1800s and was commercialized later in the century. From the time it was first put into the American market until now, the camera and the technology of the camera has changed significantly. Also, with the camera, the items that hold the photographs have changed significantly as well. For example, picture frame lighting is now ready to highlight the photographs they hold and there is also such thing as a led picture light which in effect emphasizes the photograph. The art light is something which has most in effect changed with the technology that came with the modern day camera. However, it is the camera that has dictated these changes in the frames.

The first legal camera was invented in 1814. The big, clunky machine was used to take still life pictures in black and white. The photographs approximately always came out scratchy and faded looking, but for the time, this machine was very impressive. No one probably could have imagined how photography would have changed over the next 200 years.

The next big accomplishment in photography came with the introduction of color to the photographs in 1861. In fact, some photographs from the American Civil War can be found in color. It took awhile for color cameras to be easily ready to the public, so for the next thirty years, color photographs were still a relatively new, revolutionary technology.

A turn in the way photography was done happened when the disposable camera was invented. This camera enabled travelers to take cheap cameras on vacations without carrying a big, expensive one with them instead. Also, many of these disposable cameras were made to be waterproof, so habitancy could take photographs underwater on a snorkeling or scuba diving trip.

Next in the photography world came the introduction of the digital camera. This made it so that photographs could be taken and then loaded into the computer to be sent to habitancy via the internet or they could be sent to most drug stores to be advanced at a specific time, normally set by the customer. This new technology revolutionized the way habitancy stored and used their photographs.

Finally, today there have been many new additions to the camera technology. Cell phones now have a picture-taking capability to them. Also, there is such thing as high definition photographs, which makes the picture even clearer than it already was before this digital technique. Probably the newest thing to the world of photography is the camera that has a view on both sides of it for those who do not want to have to rely on strangers to take a picture for them and their friends. With all of these advancements coming in shorter and shorter amounts of time, it will be interesting, in the upcoming decade, to see what other changes will be made in this market.
