Like any housing, you need to keep the housing clean and free from sand or grit that could create a leak. Since the main seal is not actually an o'ring, I was very faithful to clean the surfaces with a cotton tip (Qtip) and apply some o'ring grease to the surface as well as a thin film on the seal itself. The seal is sort of a wedge shape, so it should furnish a good unavoidable pressure seal. The clean part is more for all the diminutive operate buttons that allow you to convert settings of the camera underwater. We'll get into the best settings we found when using the camera underwater.

When they say the housing is good to 15 meters or nearby 33 feet, they are not lying. Not that we were trying to flood the housing or anything, but at 60 feet the camera is not operational because the pressure is squeezing the controls and shuts the camera off. At 40 feet, you might get the camera to work, but don't count on changing the settings. At 35 feet the camera seems to work fine with all the features and settings operational. For many divers, this will be too limiting because most of your dives will be deeper than 35 feet. However, keep in mind that the red/yellow/orange end of the spectrum is filtered out beyond this depth too.

The camera and housing blend are well matched and easy to operate. With the clear plastic housing, you can actually see the settings on the camera. Like most digital displays unavoidable angles are more difficult to see, but with the permissible shading and angle all is descriptive on the 2 inch screen. Even though you can convert the lens focal distance from wide angle to zoom, we kept the setting on wide angle for the dives during the whole process because of the water. Keep this in mind for all underwater photography; stay close to your field and use the widest angle inherent for best results.

For the still shots, the camera was set for the strobe to fire with each shot. This uses up your batteries faster, but if the field is closer than 8 feet, you'll have best imaging and color. The best results were our macro shots where we set the camera for 'close-up' and used the flash. When using the movie mode, you'll be impressed with the sharpness of the images, but don't expect high capability audio. The housing must absorb a lot of the sound as much of the underwater audio is muted. More than likely, you'll edit with some musical background anyway.

The color balance was a diminutive off. We did convert the settings agreeing to the instructions and the results were that the color balance was a diminutive on the blue side for topside shots. This was not an issue for the underwater shots as the greenish tint of the water was eliminated. Most of the color balance issues can be handled in the editing phase.

The claim of being 12.0 mega pixels is a diminutive deceiving because this is the 'hardware interpolation' not the 'image resolution' which is 5.0 mega pixels. All in all, we were not disappointed in the capability results of the best pictures. However, some of the shots showed camera shake even with the built in flash. This means that the shutter does adjust for the estimate of light, so it's foremost to squeeze the cameral and hold it as still as possible.

We used an 8 Gb Sd card because we predicted to take a lot of video and had ample memory space for two dives. We didn't use the provided Usb cable because we use a card reader to our laptop and then back up the memory to a conveyable hard drive. The power source uses two triple A Alkaline Batteries, so it's not a problem having new batteries for each dive. We didn't use the 'voice recorder' feature, but from our underwater video experience, it would not be recommended inside the underwater housing.

Now for the lowest line advice on this gear: If you plan to take your underwater imaging seriously, save your money for a more ample system. This could be the excellent outfit for a sport diver that wants to share their diving sense with their friends and family. For less than 0 (prices range from -100), not including your Sd Memory card or batteries, it is a value. The Svp cameras are available at some dive shops and are directly marketed from several importers online. The next "point and shoot" underwater outfits, without an external strobe, will most likely cost over 0. So, if you are going on vacation and reasoning about having your own digital camera outfit for shallow water, this is the answer. Of course, for nearby at most diving centers you could rent a camera with all included. Sometimes the option is not easy, but you can know a lot more from someone who has tested the Svp out. It is a great still and video camera outfit for nearby the water and underwater to about 35 feet.

The Art & Technique of Underwater Photography Overview

This book is aimed at anyone who is considering or beginning underwater photography, but also has the scope to help the more experienced photographer develop specific techniques, perfect particular subjects, and give advice on entering competitions and selling your work.

The subjects covered by each chapter are designed to allow you to pick your entry level and then aid both the beginner or more experienced photographer to expand and hone their skills within each technique before moving onto the next.

Photography underwater is potentially the most difficult of photographic disciplines, as most techniques that work well on the surface usually fail miserably underwater, and monitoring one's life support system, buoyancy and sea conditions complicate things even more. Using the step-by-step techniques helps the reader find all the information required for a particular technique presented in a relaxed and easy-to-grasp style.

The Best Digital Camera For The Money

Nobody for real wants, or needs the best of anything. It doesn't matter, whether it's digital cameras, automobiles, homes, or jet airplanes. What we for real want and expect, is value for our money. If I'm going to spend 0 for a camera, then I better get 0 worth of features and capability from that camera. If I spend 00 on a camera, then I better get 00 worth back as well. If you succeed a few straightforward rules, you'll see how easy it is to get the best camera your money can buy.

Acclaimed science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon was noted for a concentrate of adages known as Sturgeons Laws. My favorite, and the one most relevant to our conference is, "Ninety percent of all things is crap." It's simple, direct and brutally honest. It also for real helps narrow down our search. If the camera your finding at is not on at least one top ten list, then drop it from your search. If it doesn't have at least a four star divulge from someone, then drop if off your list. There are so many cameras to pick from these days, there's for real no need to conclude for anyone less then the best.

Underwater Photography

The second step, and a little more exertion intensive, is the trial run phase. You need to try out as many of the cameras on your now very short list (thanks to Theodore) as possible. Spend a day, and blitz your beloved camera stores. Go to two or three, and just annoy and pepper the sales staff with as many questions and requests as you can. If you go during off hours, you should have plentifulness of time and space to try out all the cameras you want. See if you can cajole them into letting you take a few home to try out. After this exercise, your short list should be for real short. Maybe even a list of 1.

Of policy if the above seems like to much work for you slackers out there, here's my short list of great cameras that are all money well spent. In the under 0 category, the Canon PowerShot A570Is. It's a straightforward point and shoot with 4x zoom lens, image stabilization, and Canon reliability. For the portability minded ultra ageement FaceBook crowd, you can't go wrong with the Canon PowerShot Sd1000 Digital Elph. Slightly less image capability then the A570Is, and slightly more expensive, but a very easy traveler. other beloved ageement of mine is the Olympus Stylus 790Sw. The only waterproof, shockproof, dust proof, and frost proof camera I know.

History of the Camera

Early cameras of the 16th and 17th century were able to project images onto paper or glass but the study of capturing, processing and printing the images took many more years. Up until the 17th century, scientists believed that light was composed basically of the 'white' that is perceived by the human eye. It took the study done by predominant physicist Isaac Newton to witness that light is truly composed of a spectrum of colors. While he made a big gift to the study of optics (that is at the core of camera advances) with this discovery, Newton did not truly have whatever to do with camera improvement per se.

The early camera that first became a phenomenon was a minute more than a pinhole camera and can be traced back to 1558. It was called the Camera Obscura. The Camera Obscura was seen as a drawing tool for a clearer and realistic portrayal of objects. It was in the early 19th century that an invention named the Camera Lucida was introduced by Cambridge scientist William Hyde Wollaston that consisted of an optical gismo that could help an artist view a distant scene or man or object on a paper outside that he or she was using to draw. In other words the artist gets to view a superimposed image of a subject on paper and this image could be effectively used to attempt to draw, trace or paint it. Both the Camera Obscura and the Camera Lucida provided an image that was temporary, which could not be lastingly captured on to paper for later reference.

Underwater Photography

Studies any way prolonged well into the 1800's on how to truly capture the image onto material. It was during this time, nearby 1822 that French researcher Joseph Nicephore Niepce, created the first photograph by using paper that was coated with a chemical. The image would not stay constantly on the paper and would disappear after a short while. Even so, despite the short-lived nature of the image, the opinion of photography was born with this experiment and paved the way for additional study and improvement in this field.

Capturing images to keep them longer and constantly became the next big quest for researchers. Other Frenchman Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre partnered with Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1829, to manufacture the process of creating permanent photographs. Joseph Niépce died in 1833 but Daguerre prolonged with the work and succeeded in 1837 after many long years of experimentation. The process of capturing photographic images that would not fade away, introduced by Daguerre came to be known as the 'daguerreotype'.

The word 'photography' was coined by scientist Sir John F.W. Herschel in 1839 and it is truly is derived from two Greek words 'photos' meaning light and 'graphein' meaning draw.

A slightly more industrialized version of the daguerreotype called the Calotype process that makes manifold copies inherent using the negative and determined recipe became available very soon after. In fact, it was during the 1840's that the use of photographic images in advertisements first started and cameras made their mark on the power of optical communication. It was not much later, in the 1850's that photographers first started experimenting with underwater photography of seascapes.

Up until 1850, the process of capturing images was cumbersome requiring upto half an hour of light exposure. The discovery made in 1851 by Frederick Scott Archer was a blessing since the new recipe termed the Collodion process called for just 2-3 seconds of light exposure to capture an image.

Prior to 1871, photographers went straight through a improvement process where they had to coat the plate with wet chemical each and every time and process the image immediately. With the invention the gelatin dry plate silver bromide process by Richard Leach Maddox, negatives did not have to be industrialized immediately. This was an leading discovery since up until then the captured image had to be processed instantly.

Kodak created in 1888 by George Eastman has been a contemporary day pioneer of sorts in cameras and photography for the masses. George Eastman and the scientists who worked with him at Kodak industrialized the photographic film in 1889 and made it available in rolls for the mass use of consumers. An leading milestone in our entertainment and transportation history was the improvement of transparent roll film by Eastman. This improvement led to Other key invention - the appeal photograph camera by Thomas Edison's in 1891.

-->Modern Times

During the 20th century the pace of technology improvement in cameras and photography prolonged at an accelerated pace much like many other key technology developments. While any key inventions like car, telephone and the gramophone description happened in the later half of the 19th century, it is the last 100 years that saw major developmental work in many areas of communications technology and as well as in other fields - Tv, aircrafts, Pcs, digital technology, digital cameras, mobile phones, fax machines and the internet, to name a few.

In the case of the camera, the developments simplified the whole process of photography, manufacture it accessible to one and all at affordable prices and the camera industry denizens of our times made it into a mass phenomenon. The first mass use camera became available at the turn of the 20th century and can be traced back to the year 1900. There are hundreds of models of cameras available today both for the amateur as well as the pro and the camera is an leading part of any family's repertoire of must have gadgets.

-->20th century chronology in the history of the camera:

1913: 35 mm still-camera created

1927: The flash bulb introduced by normal galvanic Co. (The opinion of camera flash existed much before but was based on the use of a flash light powder that was invented by German researchers)

1935- 1941: Kodak starts marketing Kodachrome film and subsequently launches Kodacolor negative film. Canon released the Hansa Canon in 1936, the first 35mm focal-plane shutter camera.

1948: The opinion of the Polaroid camera is introduced in the market. American scientist Edwin Land industrialized the process for instant photography. Later Polaroid Corporation industrialized the 'instant color' film nearby 1963.

1957: Frenchman Jaques Yves Cousteau invented the first waterproof 35mm camera for underwater photography named the Calypso Phot. The actual camera was industrialized by the Belgian airplane technical designer Jean de Wouters based on the blueprint and suggestions given to him by Cousteau.

1972: The electronic camera that does not require film was created and patented by Texas Instruments. This is any way not the same as a digital camera though you don't require film in digital cameras as well. The set in motion of the digital camera is still many years away.

1975: Kodak's experiments with digital imaging kicked off nearby the mid seventies but it will take Other 20 years before a digital camera for the home consumer shop is launched.

1978 - 1980: Asian players like Konica and Sony begin to make their mark. The 'point and shoot' automatic focus camera is launched by Konica while Sony starts talking about the camcorder and demonstrates a prototype.

1981: Sony launches a commercially available electronic still camera. Similar to the 1972 invention by Texas Instruments, the Sony electronic camera came with a mini disc on which images were recorded and stored. The recorded images could be later printed or viewed on a monitor using a reader device.

1985: Digital processing technology makes its entry. Digital imaging and processing is introduced by Pixar.

1986: The camera industry becomes even more consumer focused and taps the fun and voyage connotations behind camera usage, with the set in motion of the opinion of the disposable singular use cameras. Fuji is credited with the improvement of this concept.

Also in 1986 - 1987, Kodak started taking giant strides in digital development. Digital means, the photographic image is divided into tiny units of dots or squares known as pixels. Pixels are the programmable units of an image that can be processed by computers. Each image could be made up of millions of pixels. The use of pixels in digital technology allows storing large volumes of pixels to deliver high definition print quality.

1990: Kodak introduces Photo Cd's. It is a system of storing photographic images on Cd and then viewing them on a computer. With this improvement the user-friendly advent of the camera industry began to take concrete shape.

1991: Kodak introduces a digital camera targeted at professionals and journalists. Kodak is credited with the invention of a pixel based camera technology known to us as the digital camera. Digital cameras don't use film similar to their predecessor electronic cameras but the storage recipe is entirely distinct and the final photograph is of much higher resolution. In a digital camera photos are recorded and stored in digital form. This digital data can be transferred to a computer and processed for printing. Kodak and Canon are well known digital camera manufacturers and there are also any other key brands as well.

1994: The Apple QuickTake camera, a home use digital camera is launched. This is followed by the set in motion of a clutch of home use digital cameras by Casio, Kodak and others in quick succession during 1995 -'96.

-->The digital era:

The improvement of digital camera technology is thought about to be connected to the improvement of Tv and Video technology. The system of transmission and recording of audio-visual images using digital electrical impulses finds use in camera imaging as well.

Through the 1990's the developments prolonged in camera technology, the focus now shifting to the field of digital imaging which is where the hereafter lies. Use-friendly features like software that can download digital images directly from camera onto home computers for storing and sharing on the internet is the new norm in the shop place.

The camera, the computer, the software industry and the worldwide web are today irrevocably interlinked to empower the user in experiencing the benefits of camera usage to full potential. The innovation that sparked many an invention in the camera industry found its way into the digital world as well and prolonged among digital camera manufacturers. during 2001, the Kodak and Microsoft partnership ensured that digital camera manufacturers could use the power of photograph change Protocol (Ptp) accepted straight through Windows. The digital photo taste is a key optical driver in the Internet era. Many of Kodak digital camera models with EasyShare capabilities are compatible with Windows Xp. The Kodak EasyShare software enables users to change digital camera pictures directly from camera to their computers and then print the pictures or even email them.

Manufacturers in a connected industry like the printing industry have adapted their products to be in sync with the images created by digital cameras. Cell phone manufacturers have tied up with digital camera manufacturers to manufacture new age camera phones in up-to-date years. These camera phones can capture images and share the images straight through the cell phone.

Among the 21st century digital developments are the industrialized product offerings from digital cameras manufacturers and these are sure to occupy an leading place in the ensuing history of camera development. For instance, the Kodak pro Dcs Pro Slr/c is a high-end digital camera and the Kodak website calls the Dcs Pro Slr models the most feature-rich digital cameras on the market. It has an image sensor that can handle 13.89 million pixels and this makes it the top resolution digital camera available. High resolution determines the sharpness or level of information in photographic images. This is just a note of the capabilities that digital technology places in a user's hands. Digital camera sales figures for 2003 show that the two key players Kodak and Canon have recorded impressive growth.

-->What does the hereafter holds for camera users?

The features offered by digital cameras can be quite mind-boggling for the average user and pretty fascinating for most pros. Four key ongoing camera developments that are likely to additional heighten the process of photography:

1. Greater resolution from even the simplest, low cost camera models

2. Usage in any type of lighting conditions,

3. Compatibility across a range of software, hardware and image types

4. Rich colors and tone

While the higher-end digital evolution continues, the prices of the simple camera have crashed to such an extent that even children and teens are proud owners of simple cameras. The camera and photography interest starts young and this creates a truly large audience base for the camera industry.

And throughout history, it is obvious that the attempt of researchers and developers has been to make the camera available to a wide section of society. Without camera technology and photography, the other key developments of cinema and Tv would have been delayed and what a boring place the world would have been without Tv and films!!

The part that most divers have strangeness with for getting the best pictures is the distance from the object you are shooting & getting the light right. Getting the light and distance correct will take some practice. A great thing today is that many underwater cameras are digital so you can shoot as many pictures as you like. I tell students to shoot many more pictures than you will want and to check as you are shooting.

Another consideration is your safety, many times divers join so hard on the photography that they can potentially hurt themselves because they are not paying as much attention to the environment as they should, which is a strong reason for doing your first dives with a camera under a Padi Open Water Instructors supervision.

The procedure will teach you the correct way to get ready your camera for submersion and how to clean you camera after your dive. Manufacture sure that you get ready your camera and more importantly, your camera housing before a dive is critical; as a flood of your housing approximately all the time results in the camera being ruined. A camera can flood for many reasons with the main reason being something like a hair or a single grain of sand in the seals, which can be enough for the housing to leak, which is why great care is all the time taken in this step to be extra vigilant of foreign debris on the o-ring or the o-ring seat. You should also explore the camera for cracks or "spidering" which regularly means that you need to get a new housing. Some divers go so far as to bring magnifying glasses to explore the seals and the camera before a dive! honestly having a magnifying glass underwater is a great idea for seeing at the detail on some of the small stuff like nudibrachs and small crabs and shrimps!

Underwater lights & strobes are a coarse highlight on expensive underwater cameras that can cost upwards and beyond ,000 dollars. For the advanced lights and strobes preparation and care is a whole cut off area of study. Some underwater lights burn so hot that you cannot turn them on face of the water, or they will burn up! These advanced lights and strobes need large battery packs to sustain them underwater which have their own special considerations. For most straightforward underwater lights and strobes following the basic care of the camera will also work for them, mainly Manufacture sure that the seals are clean, greased and properly installed.

The taking of photos underwater is fun in itself but the photos afterwards growth the enjoyment and the value of your dive adventures as you remember the faces and the wildlife that that just reading your log book just can't compete with as the pictures will bring you back to those special moments underwater that you have captured and reviewing them will reinforce the pleasant memories for many years to come for you and your friends.
